How do the utility rates in Tallahassee compare to other Florida cities?
The Florida Municipal Electric Association (FMEA) maintains an archive of Florida residential and commercial rate comparison as well as other statistics on Florida Electric Utilities. This information can be found by going to:
http://www.publicpower.com/One thing you will notice on this comparison is that the City of Tallahassee Utilities has the lowest base rate of any of the utilities listed. However, because of our mandated reliance on clean burning, natural gas as the fuel we use to generate electricity and the ongoing high price of this fuel, the "Fuel Adjustment or Cost Adjustment" is the highest.
For instance, the total billing rate for 1000 kwh (about average monthly use, yours may differ) for Tallahassee is lower than Key West, Havana or Fort Meade and higher than Gainesville or Jacksonville. Jacksonville has two power plants that burn coal for fuel and Gainesville has one power plant that burns coal as fuel.
